Well, thanks to many of you, our Yeomen Women's Rugby Team raised a total of $1,635 for MS research, services and friends living with MS in this past weekends Super Cities WALK for MS. There were 5 Yeomen players on the fundraising team!

It was about 2 degrees, wet and windy at the walk but we had a great time walking, chatting and meeting loads of wonderful people out to support the MS Society. The Toronto WALK raised over 675,000 and I am proud to say we were a part of that!

Yeomen 2007 Season Ends

After two tough games the Yeomen 2007 season comes to a close.

Senior Game Recap:

Bright and early Sunday morning the Yeomen Senior team walked on the field to play the first placed Scottish. The game started off at a very fast pace with both teams eager to score. Scottish quickly succeeded but the Yeomen remained right with them. Soon after Brooke was able to crack the Scottish defence and scored the first Yeoman try of the game.
From that moment on the Yeomen were aggressive and hungry for the ball. The next try came with Kate Ballweg's untouched 20 meter run down the sideline to score right between the posts. Unfortunately the Yeomen did not come out with the win, however everyone played amazing and it was an amazing game to play in. The game was played with passion and pride and very exciting to be a part of it.

Development game vs Barbs, Sunday August 12th write-up: Jacquie Ott

Spirits were high with the development team as we stepped onto the pitch after having watched the seniors play an excellent game of rugby vs the Scottish earlier in the day. Although we were short players, so were the Barbs and so it was decided to play a game of 10's. Knowing that their were more gaps on the Field, all the yeoman knew their jobs and were ready to give the Barbs all we got. We were able to hold the Barbs off for most of the first half with excellent defence and even getting the ball which gave us the ability to show off our offensive skills in the backs. Every single forward did an excellent job on the Field in the scrums, rucks and mauls and the backs did a fantastic job communicating and distributing the ball. Although the Barbs pack was bigger then us, we were able to steal a few of their scrums, and the line outs were fantastic on both offense and defense with everyone stepping it up. Unfortunately, Chloe, our scrum half was injured and had to get off the field, but after Sarah Berry momentarily playing scrumhalf, Nina came out to help her fellow team mates and even scored a try for the yeoman, even if it was the only one. Minnie also had to take to the sidelines after an injury where Alisha took the field and did what she does best, scare the other team running at them. Thank you to everyone who came out and who stayed to watch the game. Although we did not win, it was a great way to end our rough season.  Everyone on the field remained calm, even when the Barbs were taking cheap shots and getting dirty (although it was very very very hard).

U19 Kudos

This is a little note written by Parissa regarding the last U-19 game:

The final score of the game was 22-0 for the Barbs BUT that score does not reflect the fact that our girls outplayed them by a mile.  So much so that the Barbs' coaches told me (and their own team) that they may have won the game by scoring, but that they were outperformed on the field by a team that only had 12 players (by the way, the Barbs fielded a full 15 and even made a few substitutions in the second half -- no wonder they scored 22 points, they have a three person overlap the whole game!).  Our team was inspirational and I must admit that there were a couple of times when I thought I would start crying because I was so proud of our U19 players.  They played with heart, maturity, respect for another and perseverance.  This is all in light of the fact that seven of them arrive at Fletchers only a few minutes before kick-off and we were all scrabbling a bit beforehand.  A continued commitment to fitness and more practices together will only make this strong team stronger.  Kudos to Chloe, Stephanie, Amanda Henderson and Hanieh for exceptional work.

OWL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to our very own Hannah Cho who was awarded OWL Player of the Year for 2006!

Annie and Gaye accepted the award on her behalf (which happened to be a pair of Mitre size 14 boots -- I know that girl has quick feet, but I didn't realize that she had such big feet!  For those who are curious, Hannah can contact Mitre for an appropriately sized pair of boots).

The Rugby Ontario Mitre Players Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of Ontario coaches and players from the 2006 season.

Rugby Canada Positional Skills Handbook

The staff of Rugby Canada’s Development Department and the Rugby Football Union (England) have put together this excellent coaching resource.

"As coaches and teachers have the responsibility to prepare the strategic and tactical aspects of the game, it is important that players focus on the core skills including the development of their own skills in relation to their position. Strength and conditioning fitness are integral to the success of any player looking to participate in a performance environment."
